Didn't know where to ask this, so I'll just leave it here.

How come British singers (love a lot of them btw) "leave" their accents when singing?
Most (if not all) hit songs don't have any remnants of a British accent although the person singing it speaks British...
I hope someone can enlighten me...

For example:
Original - British singer (no sign of accent)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a529FhQwVgc

Cover - ordinary British guy (some accent)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBJihYnHPqs

Usually it has something to do with selling records in america - Regional accents tend not to work for anyone accept the Arctic monkeys (For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOSxM0rNPM).

Plus, listening to the pronunciation of some of the words in the Ed Sheeran Video actually sound unmistakably English.

Yeah ... that was not the best example ... :) I actually hear the "can't". :)

Not everything, but to piss off the largest English speaking market because they can't understand your accent (like Cheryl Cole's removal from X-Factor for example) is problematic for some acts. Diction needs to be clear and universal, which is why most people train to lose their accents while singing.

I call bullshit...
Almost all English accents rock! I say almost because I can't actually understand some of them.

Except that this is an actual thing that record companies insist on for many bands.

It's MASSIVELY different from the 90s where everyone in the charts was actively trying to sound American.
Listen to any hip hop act now, and they're ALL rapping in English accents.

Sometimes while singing you NATURALLY sing "Caaaan't" rather than "Cahhhn't" cos it's an easier syllable to sing. You're not even thinking of USA or UK.
When we recorded a song called Sold Out last year, there was a repeated line in each pre-chorus which say "I just can't work it out" and we had to rerecord it 5 times cos we kept saying "caaaaan't" by mistake, realising straight away, and having to record with a really unnatural feel to make it sound English! Odd but true!
