Bel needs a gaming laptop. Halps.

Whaaaaa?! You actually want to talk about something that has nothing to do with Helkpo or with WoW?

Bel needs a gaming laptop. Halps.

Postby wemwom » Sat Jun 06, 2015 11:35 pm

So I need a laptop, as I'm moving around a lot and lugging a desktop about is not the one. Of course I'm going to need something that I can game with, but I have a budget of around 1k. Halps.

You can choose two of the following: affordable, gaming, portable.

That said, I've put in an order for a work laptop with a 4710HQ processor, 16 gigs of 1666 Mhz RAM, a 128Gb SSD and a 1Tb HDD and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M. I got it for €1199. Theoretically, this should be *slightly* better than my current desktop, which was absolutely top of the line five years ago and is midway acceptable right now.

Thing is, an actual desktop with similar stats would cost roughly half that price. My heartfelt suggestion is to go for a desktop and get a micro tower. Those things are easy to lug around. The only thing you can't do is take it to work and back, but if you're moving once per month they're fine. Basically, unless you're going to take public transportation, get a small desktop. If you need to take it on public transportation, take a laptop and cry a little on the inside.

Just looking at a random UK vendor, this would be appropriate:
http://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/ ... force-960m

Add a SSD to that and you're at just under a thousand pounds.

By the way here's an pretty decent site for configuring gaming laptops in the UK.

Although it's not relevant right now: they also do prices in Euros and ship elsewhere for those in the rest of Europe, they therefore offer other keyboards too!

Cheers for that, I've been looking for something like that in Le Belgique, but the closest I can find is Dutchland. If that is cheaper, I might consider ordering from it too. Though shipping must cost them a mint and a half...

I gamed on a laptop while I was on exchange in Canada and, well, it was dreadful. The thing was super noisy under load (and that fan is right in your face too), and even then it overheated frequently and would throttle back. The HDD was slow, Windows booted in a mere 3 minutes, all in all 0/10 would not recommend.

Granted, this was 8 years ago and technology has advanced quite a bit. I will concede that today's gaming-focused laptops are miles better than what I had, but I do agree with Lassy: only get a laptop to game on if it is your only option. And if it is, get one with an SSD to boot off of (and maybe an HDD for game mass storage), don't go over 1440p resolution (I'd probably even stick to 1080p), try and get 16 gigs of ram. Oh and a matte screen finish if you can find it.

If you select Belgium and check out the delivery page, it says it costs them €27, but is included in the cost of the machine.

A 4k monitor has 4 times the pixels of a 1080p monitor. That sort of thing is difficult enough to drive on a desktop, even if you had a laptop with a GTX980M, while a very competent card, it is still a mobile version confined in a very small space and will likely struggle with 4k gaming

Thanks Lassy, what would you recpmmend for desktop then? I am completely clueless with this stuff!

I'm going to be moving twice in the next 2 months but after that I'll be planted for at least 8 months while I finish my degree. After that I'm not sure.

Building a fully custom pc for someone else is a bit tricky. It really depends on how flexible you are. For example, if you can put your ankles behind your ears, you can make a few extra bucks fairly easily and get higher quality gear.

Kidding aside, there's a few questions you need to ask yourself:

Are you content with a midi case or do you want to build as small as possible? Cube cases are slightly more expensive and you should talk with the builder to ensure that you can stuff all your components into that tight space. You can also get a nice aluminium midi case, doesn't weigh much, everything fits comfortably, slightly more expensive.

Then, are you willing to add extra fans? Slightly more noisy, extra 10 quid, allows for overclocking (never overdo overclocking, always stay under what's theoretically feasible, most builders allow you OCing options without any (or much) extra charge.).

Graphics card: crucial choice, but hard to make for someone else: example: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-960 ... GTX-750-Ti
The 750 Ti costs you £107 (or £87 for the non Ti version), The 960 costs you £167. Are you willing to add 60 quid for a current-gen graphics card? They have an equal amount of ram but the 960 is tons faster (read: in 2 years, they both won't be able to do highest resolution textures, but in 4 years, the 750 Ti will start to feel slow on medium settings but the 960 will still see you fine. Is that worth 60£ to you?

Are you crazy and cheap enough to get an AMD card? (I've been burned twice on their cards, I can't bring myself to consider them as an option for anyone. They are cheaper though.)

The only thing I always struggle with is the choice in motherboard. If you can cram everything into it, I never really cared for other features. I'm told I'm wrong about that. Maybe Tohya or Hardly can chime in.

I took a crack at it:

General guidelines:

I'll see if scan.co.uk does any better with those specs. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow. PC specialist was really finnicky with its cases though, and I had to go slightly more expensive. (for refrence this case's dimensions: 430mm x 210mm x 497mm (Approx H x W x D) No aluminium.)

Also, this desktop's stats are almost on the same level than the £2.5k beast I'm assembling. The only different is no SLI graphics card, so only a quarter of the graphical RAM (which is fine, just leave ULTRAHYERREALISM textures off). Only 16 gigs of RAM (which is plenty, 32 is really overkill, 64 is absurdness.) and you have two less cores. All in all, this is a very respectable and beefy build. Theslightly upscale cpu fan also lets easily get someone to overclock it 20% (and by easily, I mean the risk is literally 0 if you stay at 20% increase.) You can either do that now or three years down the line when you install Blizzard's new mmo.

Kinda makes me wonder why I'm aiming to throw that extra 1.5k at it. Maybe I don't need triple GTX Titans....

Scan ends up more expensive, £1184.84.

Mostly because they don't offer 1600 Mhz RAM and force you to take RAM clocked at 2100 Mhz. Not strictly a bad thing, because it is faster, but it's one of the numbers where the actual performance gain is really, really small.
This does include a very neat cube case though, (Carbide Series Air 540 Mid-Tower PC Case). Small (16" L x 13" W x 18" H) and comes with three great coolers, just make sure to double check that everything will fit (you can request them to call you or just add it in the comments).

Everything else is either identical or very similar. No free Arkham Knight game though.
